After serving in the Royal Navy Dave knicknamed "Chunky" joined the Nottinghamshire police and finished his career as a Sergeant. His connection with the village started with his friendship with Ron Priestley (from school) and through spending time at Ferry Farm met Geof Shaw and subsequently Patricia Shaw whom he married.

He started playing for the team in the 1940's and can be seen in the 1939-45 Thrumpton team during the war. He usually opened the batting and was very useful with the bat, a good fielder and turned his arm with a bit of spin on the odd occasion.
