Taking over the 2nd XI this season I wasn't really sure what to expect. The plan was always to try and bring on some of our Juniors, try to develop them, and give them more opportunities in senior cricket.
I didn't really have any ambition as to where I wanted the side to finish but after the start we had I was hoping to just hold our own.
We began the season with defeats to both Basford Mill and Fiskerton & Thurgarton. We then picked up 3 good victories before our darkest moment of the season, a near 150 run defeat to eventual league Champions Claypole.
Then after a nail biter of a win against Eastwood and a badly tempered abandoned game against Sohani, we seemed to find a bit of form, winning 5 of our next six games, this put us right up in the promotion mix.
Unfortunately our next game was against Claypole and after both defeat in that game and losses to both Eastwood and runners up Sohani our chances of going up were over. We did however beat Kinoulton in our final game of the season, bowling them out for 48.
Overall we had a fantastic season where we finished with a record of winning 10 games, losing 7 and 1 no result. We saw some fantastic performances and progressions through the season with the bat Adam, Jon, Dan and Naren were fantastic all year.
Adam and Dan were also vital with the ball this season, we also saw Ethan step up to really take some good wickets and continue to improve every week. Binnu and I also formed a fairly tight opening partnership with the ball.
Jon was great behind the stumps with 15 victims this year. The fielding was brilliant led by Nigel who has been brilliant all season, THE Catch at Basford Mill is the moment of the season for the 2nds.
We also welcomed a few new faces this year Will, Anshul and James all came in and played their part! At the end of the season we also welcomed a few players back down from the 1sts, Jack and Jake both came into the side and we're superb with the bat. Craig also came down to bolster the side for the final few games.
Another highlight of being captain for me was being able to blood plenty of youngsters, Lewis, Archie, Abigail, Liam, Lucas and Max all stepped into the side this year and gained experience that will stand them in good stead for next season.
A few thankyous, first of all to both Jon and Adam for serving as my vice captains this year both of them are a massive part of why we were so successful.
Ian Miller, a huge thanks for Umpiring most Saturdays for me, especially when the opposition don't have an umpire. Here's a small token of my thanks.
Joshua James for his Scoring both in the book and on the tablet, for someone who has only been around the game for a short time to be able to score as well as you do is fantastic and makes things so much easier for all the players on a Saturday. Here's a little something to say thanks.
Finally to my wife Ellen and Kelly James, thank you for all your help and support, for doing the bar, doing drinks and for helping around all the social events we've organised.
Also a huge Thankyou to everyone who came on the August Tour to Northumberland, it was a huge success and I know we are all looking forward to returning next year. More details coming soon.
2022 has been a fantastic season and hopefully is the start of something special, I cannot wait to see what 2023 brings.
